What to Wear on Your Photography Session

Choosing what to wear for your photography session is an important part of creating images you love. Portrait and family photography is meant to be enjoyed for generations to come, so your efforts in preparation are definitely worthwhile. I want my clients to always have a fun and relaxed photo shoot and planning process, so I thought I’d share some helpful tips on what to wear your upcoming session.

Portrait

Lighter colors work great in nature. For example, choosing pastel yellows or blues with jeans/khaki pants especially if you have a sunset photography session booked works really well together. Please avoid bright whites and bright colors. They attract attention away from the face and may be reflective. Clothing should not be too tight or too loose. Fabric that flows in the breeze like a lightweight scarf is a plus. Logos, large prints and patterns are discouraged as they are a major distraction. Minimal accessories and simply styled hair off the face minimize distracting shadows. It is always a great idea to have makeup and hair professionally styled for your photography session.

Group & Family

The goal here is to have everyone coordinate but not match each other exactly. A cool tip is to lay out all the clothing selections for the group onto a bed or large, flat surface. Everything should be included…accessories too! Then, take a careful look at the collection. If your eye goes to any one item in particular, you can be certain that the same thing will happen in a photograph and that item should be changed.

Newborns

Photographs of newborns and babies look best in their natural element with a soft blanket! If you would like your baby to be photographed with clothes, solid, light colors work best. Of course, please feel free to bring an amazing outfit or costume you would love your baby to wear. Feel free to bring any kind of prop that you would like included. I prefer parents to dress in solid black so I can composite creative shots in Photoshop.

Toddlers and Kids

Solid, light colors work best. Bright, fun and funky clothes bring out a whimsical side while khaki’s, jeans and off white shirts are for more serious captures. A flowy, tulle dress is always beautiful for little girls. Don’t forget hats, boots, blankets, jackets, flower crowns, etc. can be great to bring out their personality. Feel free to bring any prop or sentimental items that you would like included. Please ask for a prop selection upon booking in the comments section.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask before your session via email at McallisterImagery@gmail.com.

Looking forward to your shoot!
